Dr Alessandro Chiarotto works as a researcher at the Department of General Practice, Erasmus University Medical Center in Rotterdam, and at the Department of Health Sciences, VU University in Amsterdam, in the Netherlands. He has a background in physiotherapy and clinical epidemiology; during his PhD, he lead an international initiative to develop a core outcome measurement set for clinical trials in patients with low back pain. His research mainly focuses on 1) diagnosis, prognosis and management of patients with painful musculoskeletal disorders, especially spine-related complaints, 2) evaluation, selection and interpretation of patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs). He has experience in conducting systematic reviews of randomised controlled trials, observational studies, clinical practice guidelines, and PROMs. He is also involved in meta-research on the use of reporting guidelines in the rehabilitation field.
